Boomkat Product Review:Now this is old old school! Seemingly beamed in direct from the prohibition-era Deep South, William Elliot Whitmore is sour mashed stained neo-bluegrass that sounds as if breakfast regularly consists of 20 full fat Marlboro.
Based around banjo and acoustic guitar blues, Elliot Whitmore takes a deceptively simple palate then furnishes it with flourishes of instrumentation which range from chrome finger slide guitar on 'The Day The End Finally Came' through to his Granddad's accordion on 'Sorest of Eyes'. With a vocal style that is two parts Tom Waits and one part the bloke from Crash Test Dummies (you heard right.), Whitmore spins meandering, dark-hearted blues/gospel tales that bare comparison with the story telling qualities of Johnny Cash. With songs like 'Diggin' My Grave' far closer to bluegrass legends such as Ralph Stanley and The Cox Family than the nu-blues upstarts of Devendra Banhart and Willy Mason, Elliot Whitmore is for those who like their music to be dusty, lyrically sincere and filtered through bourbon.
